What Is Dysgeusia?
Dysgeusia is a medical condition characterized by a distortion or alteration of the sense of taste. People with dysgeusia may experience persistent abnormal tastes. Such as: metallic taste, bitter taste or sour flavors. Even when not eating.
Unlike temporary taste changes, dysgeusia can last for extended periods and is not always related to a specific food or drink.
Understanding the Term
The word “dysgeusia” comes from Greek roots: dys- meaning “bad” or “abnormal,” and geusis meaning “taste.”
It refers specifically to any change in taste perception that deviates from the norm. Whether it’s a complete loss, a reduced sense or a misinterpretation of flavors.
